Supported Payment Gateways
Comprehensive guide to payment methods and gateways supported by Vrio including credit cards, digital wallets, and alternative payment options for diverse customer preferences.
A payment method is a way for customers to pay for goods or services they have purchased from a business. Payment methods can include cash, credit cards, debit cards, and digital payment options such as PayPal, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
The choice of payment method can depend on a variety of factors, including the customer's preferences and convenience, the type and cost of the product or service being purchased, and the security and reliability of the payment method.
For businesses, accepting a variety of payment methods can help to increase sales and improve customer satisfaction. By offering multiple payment options, businesses can accommodate a wider range of customers with different preferences and financial situations. This can help to reduce cart abandonment rates and increase overall conversion rates.
However, it's important for businesses to also consider the costs associated with each payment method, including transaction fees, processing fees, and chargeback fees. Some payment methods may also require additional security measures to protect against fraud and ensure that customer data is kept secure.
Vrio allows you to configure one or more supported payment methods to support your business.

$0.00 Transaction Handling
Not all gateways handle $0.00 transactions the same way. Most gateways will decline a $0.00 charge outright, while others may accept it. Each gateway's Supported Functionality section indicates whether it accepts $0.00 transactions natively.
Initial Transactions
For initial transactions (the first charge on a new order), $0.00 requires special handling because the card has not yet been validated. How Vrio handles this depends on the gateway — some will run a $1.00 authorization and void it immediately, others will validate and store the card without attempting a charge, and a few natively accept $0.00 transactions. The result of this card validation will determine if the transaction is successful or not. Refer to the specific gateway documentation for details on how each one behaves.
Bypass $0 Transaction Authorizations
Each gateway has a Bypass $0 Transaction Authorizations checkbox in its merchant settings. When checked, Vrio will skip the gateway entirely for $0 transactions — no card validation will occur, and the transaction will be treated as successful. This is useful when card validation is not a concern, such as free trial offers where the card will be validated on the first paid renewal. Refer to the specific gateway documentation for details on what bypassing means for that gateway.
Important: When bypassing card validation on the initial transaction, the card is not verified at the gateway before the first paid renewal. Since Vrio does not store CVV, subsequent renewal transactions are sent without it — some gateways or processors may decline these transactions if the card was never authenticated initially. Consider this when deciding whether to enable the bypass.
Renewals
For subscription renewals, Vrio automatically handles $0.00 cycles without contacting the gateway. When a renewal cycle is priced at $0.00, the charge is auto-approved and the subscription advances to the next cycle. If this cycle is marked as Final, the subscription will be marked complete. No gateway interaction occurs and no merchant configuration is needed — this behavior is automatic for all gateways.
