Hard Declines
By setting a specific Gateway Response as a hard decline, this will restrict this type of declined transaction from being reattempted within the Payment Router or Dunning Profile.
Gateway DependantHard Decline logic is not supported for certain Gateways at this time. This is due to the nature of the decline code being used across multiple decline reasons.
Within the Vrio Gateway page you may see what Gateways are supported at this time.
Permissions Required:User permission requirements to configure Hard Declines:
- Full Access to Merchants
- No Merchant Restrictions within the User
What is a Hard Decline
A hard decline code indicates a transaction has been permanently rejected by the payment processor, typically due to insufficient funds, closed accounts, or fraud concerns, preventing any further processing attempts.
Unlike soft declines, which may allow for retries, hard declines require the user to resolve underlying issues.
Why set Hard Declines
Hard Declines are set so you are not attempting transactions that will continue to decline.
- lowering processing fees
- lowering declined transactions to the gateway
How to set Hard Declines
-
Navigate to Settings
-
Select Gateways from the Payment Configuration section
-
Choose the Gateway
-
Toggle any Gateway Response to YES to be treated as a Hard Decline
Where Hard Decline Logic Applies
- Payment Router reattempt logic - If a gateway response comes back with a hard decline, it will not be reattempted
- Dunning Schedule reattempt logic - If a gateway response comes back with a hard decline on a renewal, it will not be scheduled for reattempted
Where Hard Decline Logic Does Not Apply
When using any third-party dunning provider such as FlexPay or FlexFactor, the Hard Decline dunning logic will not apply. All reattempt logic is maintained within their external rules.
FAQ
Q: Does Vrio auto-define Hard Declines?
A: No
Q: How do I know what a Hard Decline is?
A: Utilize the Dunning report to determine the common Gateway Decline reasons. This report ties back to the original (initial) decline for the sale. Using the Gateway Response Code as the filter, you can see the initial decline reason, then what % was recovered. This helps identify those reasons in which the recovery rate is very low.
Q: I want to restrict a decline reason on the initial only, not on dunning.
A: That is currently not available. Decline stop codes are configurable on the Dunning Profile or at the overall Gateway level.
